The summer of 1940 saw an epic battle in the skies over Southern England. The RAF and Luftwaffe each fought to gain aerial supremacy over the other. The RAF fielded a formidable fighter force, the most famous machine in its arsenal being the Supermarine Spitfire.
The opposing Luftwaffe also fielded a potent single-engine fighter, but it was the twin-engined Messerschmitt Bf110 with its longer range that often engaged the RAF over England. Its longer range did not translate into fighting ability and it found itself under-powered and outclassed when compared to the nimble and potent Supermarine Spitfire. Many 110s were downed and the Spitfire proved itself to be the most capable fighter in the air during the Battle of Britain.
